Press release: January 19, 2010

The people of Haiti need our help. With an estimated 200,000 dead, 250,000 injured and 1.5 million homeless, Haiti is in a time of utmost need. The World Food Programme has distributed over 250,000 food rations, but with 3 million people to feed, this is still not enough. The WFP needs to deliver 100 million rations within the next 30 days, only 16m of which has been promised by the U.S.A., Italy and Denmark. However, with the destruction of much of Haiti's infrastructure, the difficulty also lies in getting it there. The international community, governments, agencies and charities alike, has already raised a huge amount, but Haiti still needs our help, not just with food, but shelter, healthcare, and much more besides. It is a country that has been brought to its knees in almost every respect.

The Red Cross is committed to alleviating suffering, in whatever form, worldwide, but it honours the intent of the donation, both in terms of the disaster and the amount of money that gets to the victims. In their words, "An average of 92 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs". It is a charity committed to mobilizing people to help their neighbours, and has already established 11 temporary aid distribution points, to replace their permanent one that was destroyed. It is providing not just medical care from its 400 official workers and thousands of local volunteers, but also tarps, blankets, hygiene items, buckets, shelter supplies and kitchen sets. It has made every effort to overcome the country's broken infrastructure, having brought overland, from the Dominican Republic, a mobile hospital capable of treating 30,000 people. So far it has mobilized over 500 tons of aid and commits itself to helping Haiti on all fronts. The Red Cross's coordination and efficiency in getting aid distributed has proved to be the benchmark of all the relief efforts.

We at Rated Apartments are contributing to this effort by donating £1 for every booking we receive this month to the Red Cross. Please help us save the lives of all those in need.
